Kumar Mandal/Kathmandu:
Region No. 6 Baitadi lifted the trophy of the U-19 National Cricket
Tournament on Thursday after hammering strong title contender Region No. 2
Birgunj by four wickets in a wobbly final held at TU Cricket Ground, Kirtipur.
Baitadi
successfully achieved a comparatively modest target of 101 in in 31.4 overs
losing their six wickets.
Baitadi
started their run chase comfortably, riding on a 59 runs opening partnership
between their openers Surendra Chand and Binod Tamang. Both scripted a
foundation for the victory before Prem Tamang left the pitch after scoring 18
runs off 57 balls that included a boundary. Skipper Surendra led from the front
and scored a brisk 38 off 44 balls with seven boundaries before falling prey to
Aakib Ansari in the 18th over. Ansari trapped Chandan Rawal leg
before wickets in the successive delivery that gave some ray of hopes to
Birgunj. Aakib claimed his second wicket when Bikram Sob (2) was caught by
Bijay Ghalan in the 20th over, and Baitadi still needed 30 runs to
win. Santosh Bhatta added 8 runs to the total before being caught and bowled by
Hasim Ansari.
Baitadi
on 5-79 looked feeble in the middle but thanks to cool and calm Saurav Chand
who played a not out innings of 22 runs off 43 balls and guided his side to the
victory. Binod Lama scored an unhurried
2 runs off 20 balls and was last batsman to fall from Baitadi. Aakib Ansari and
Hasim Ansari shared three wickets each yet could not block Baitadi from taking
home the trophy.
Earlier, electing to bat Birgunj could not
start well and were bundled on a stumpy 100 after losing their all wickets in
37.2 overs. Birgunj lost their dependable opener Hasim Ansari in the third
over. Hasim played quick fire run a ball 15 run including two fours and a six,
while his opening partner Bijay Ghalan contributed a time-consuming 9 off 36
deliveries. Suraj Kurmi played a praiseworthy knock of 30 runs off 67 balls
with four fours. Aakib Ansari was bowled out by Prem Tamang in the 35th
over after scoring 18 crucial runs. Naresh Raj Giri added 9 runs to the tally
and was sent back by Binod Lama. Remaining batsmen could not mark the double
digit for Birgunj as they were slumped to put a low target for Baitadi.
