Gauchan heads for IPL 5


Nepali national cricket team’s veteran spinner Shakti Gauchan has been called to join the training camp by Indian Premier League (IPL) team, Rajasthan Royals on Wednesday evening. The champions of the first edition of IPL, Rajasthan Royals have invited Shakti to join the trial base camp to be held in Nagpur from March 30 to April 5.

Shakti is the first Nepali cricketer offered to be a part of the cash-rich league IPL. National Cricket team coach Pubudu Dassanayake is the man behind the curtain for this feat. Dassanayake had referred Shakti to Romi Winder, an associate member of the Rajasthan Royals looking for a quality left hand spinner. Dassanayake suggested Shakti as a qualified candidate to take the place of a left arm spinner.

Sharing his excitement with TNP, Shakti said, “My happiness has no bound as this is the first instance of any Nepali players getting a chance to be part of IPL.”

Shakti tags this opportunity as a turning point of his career. “This opportunity can change my life, so I am taking it seriously,” added Shakti. “Taking part in the training camp is an achievement in itself. I am hopeful that I can deliver my best,” Shakti confided.

Shakti, 29, is undoubtedly among the best Cricketers Nepal have ever produced. He was the highest wicket taker for Nepal in the ICC World T20 Qualifiers 2012 concluded last week in the UAE. In all, Shakti had bagged 16 wickets, when Nepal finished seventh in the tournament. Shakti had also earned hat-trick against Denamark that was also the first ever hat-trick for Nepal in senior cricket. Later, he was included in the best XI list made by the famous Cricket website, Espncricinfo.com. Now, the green light from IPL outfit has added another golden chapter to Shakti’s 12-year long career, who was out of any format of the International Cricket for two years.

Interestingly, Shakti started his cricketing career from India. Born in Calcutta, Shakti played regional tournaments during his stay in India while his father worked in the Indian Army. Shakti represented U-16 Bombay team in 1998 and went for All India U-16 Camp in 1999, where Gautam Gambhir, an illustrious opening batsman of India at present was also sharpening his cricketing skills.

According to Shakti, National team skipper Paras Khadka was the first to congratulate him on his latest achievement. “I am delighted that Paras wished me first.” Shakti also said that the break can be a launch pad for Nepali cricket as well. “Linked with IPL team can be an exposure for Nepali crickete which is teemed with talented players,” opined Shakti, who will fly to Nagpur on Thursday afternoon.
